Results of the Crimestoppers 5K Run/Walk
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SUNDAY, JULY 4, 2010
FOR MORE INFORMATION: Please contact Mike Melton at 772-349-1704

KEY WEST - Jason Patchett-Gillis didn't let a little extra mileage slow him down as he won the Crimestoppers 5K Run/Walk held Sunday morning at Smathers Beach. Patchett-Gillis, 21, covered the out-and-back course in 18 minutes, 43 seconds, Marathon's Martin Sykut finished second in 20:23, and Jozef Roman of Key West was third in 20:43.

The course was inadvertently a quarter-mile longer than the traditional 3.1 miles that defines a 5K run, owing to construction that appears to have extended the endpoint of an aluminum guardrail that was used to define the turnaround point of the race. All runners ran the same course - it was just a little further than they expected.

In the women's race, Jacksonville's Kara Mathias won the Overall title in 22:08, Emily Edwards of Cape Coral was second in 22:53, and Key West's Alyssa Sawyer finished third in 24:23.

Pat DeQuattro of Key West won the men's Active Military category with a time of 21:46, good enough for sixth place overall. Key West's Matthew Mohnacky was second in 22:44. Key West's Ronelyn Benton won the women's Active Military category in 31:28, and Marylois Calhoun of LaGrange Georgia was second in 41:15.

A total of 212 finishers completed the event. Proceeds from the race went to benefit the Crimestoppers program in Key West.
