Runners and spectators enjoyed the 10th Annual Schooner
Wharf fantasy Mile Run and Festivities.
The 10th Annual Schooner Wharf Fantasy Mile Run, had best
turnout ever with 105 finishers and more pets then we have
ever had in previous years, The rain held off allowing for
runners and in the back of the pack various dogs from toy
dogs, whippets and retrievers, to have a great race. This
run is my favorite and as the race founder have always
enjoyed the pet and costume division! We had numerous prizes
for the pets, donated generously by Pampered Pet, lots of
shirts from schooner wharf, prints from the seaport gallery
and raffles galore. Great food provided by Schooner Wharf
Bar and waterfront market, and beer donated by Samuel Adams.
City of Key West Police did their usual excellent job of
traffic control and Key West Southernmost Runners provided
course monitors, the timing and results.
Race Committee: Barb Wright/Race founder/promoter, her
volunteers Jill Lynch, Lori Bosco, Lisa Mcsteen, Dave Hemmel,
Tech Dir. from Key West Southernmost Runners, Mark Bell,
finish line and results Cindy McVeigh and Debbie Rothstein,
Road Monitors, Mary Ann Nelson, and numerous volunteers,
from the club and NASKW.
It was an exciting finish with Zack Harden, 16 wearing the
Obama mask rushing to the finish line with a time of 5.04
and 16 seconds later Michael Labounty 16, with a time of
5.20 wearing the McCain mask, this may be a foreshadowing of
what to come? Male Race was dominated by the Key West High
School Cross country team, also the recipient of the
proceeds of this event.

CrimeStoppers
July 4, 5K Run/Walk 2008
The tradition of running on the 4th of July continues in Key
West with the 18th Annual Crimestoppers 5K Run/Walk. Runners
and walkers faced the usual conditions of summer in the Keys
though were blessed with a little more cloud cover than
usual for the 7:30 AM start. Hosted at the Sheraton Suites
Resort, and run on one of the most beautiful stretches of
the new pathway along South Roosevelt Blvd, and the Ocean,
the straight out and back course proved to be very fast for
most of the participants. Miami Runner Brian Sharkey, 16:12,
pushed the pace for the overall win, followed by Stephen
Gonzalez, 16:31, of Statesboro Georga, and Victor Allen,
17:11, of Waterford Michigan. The Pritchart family, from
Birmingham, Alabama led the women taking the first 3 places
with the Overall woman’s win going to Laurel Pritchard,
17:57, 2nd OA and 1st, 15-19 female was Grace Pritchard,
20:11, followed by mom Carol Pritchart, 20:49. Lots of out
of town runners as well as locals took home great awards and
booty from the awards, post race raffle and silent auction.
Many out of town runners joined the locals for this favorite
event; notables were 10 students that came down from Georgia
for a fitness week that includes daily workouts, good food
and running the Crimestoppers race. Many families, some in
matching outfits, helped to fill up the younger age groups,
while special patriotic prizes added a special flair for
locals and out of towners on this July 4 week-end.
The Race promoter Barbara Wright of BW Promotions thrilled
the crowd with the great organization, awards, refreshments
and prizes. (“It was a challenging year but we really
appreciate all the sponsors, in kind donations, auction
items and raffles from the community to support this
fund-raiser we do for Crime Stoppers of the Keys”) Island
weather, good support from the community, and great
atmosphere of the Sheraton Suites made the awards
presentation, silent auction and post race party a huge
success.
The Crimestopper’s Board of Directors, Greg Artman, Stan
Rzad, Doug Morgan, Harry Sawyer, Mary Sawyer, Michael
Haskins, Diane Gibson, and Hal Barrett, filled in key
volunteer positions, with many other supporting members.
KW Southernmost Runners did the Timing, Technical
Coordination and Results, Don and Mary Ann Nelson, Rick
