2009 Key West “Bight Before Christmas” Holiday Celebration - Historic Seaport Harbor Walk
Location: The Key West “Harbor Walk of Lights” at the Historic Seaport - around the Key West Bight* Marina.
A four block waterfront area where Green St., William St., Margaret St, and Grinnell St. meet the Gulf of Mexico in Key West, Fl.
* (A “Bight” is a body of water surrounded on three sides by land)
When: Starting Thanksgiving Eve, November 25th through New Year’s Eve, December 31st.

The full 5 weeks of the 2009 Holiday season will be celebrated on and around the Key West Harbor Walk of Lights at the Historic Seaport in old town Key West. The natural beauty of the Key West waterfront is more alive than usual with the sparkle of holiday lights on the water. The Key West Harbor Walk of Lights stretches for four blocks and features four, real southern most Christmas Trees. People now gather every year on the waterfront to enjoy all the lights, stroll the Harbor Walk shops and galleries for that unique Key West gift, and catch one of the many big and little events that happen along the Harbor Walk of Lights throughout the entire holiday season. All events are great for kids of any age and give everyone an excuse to enjoy a few days down at the Key West waterfront away from the hustle and bustle of the “real world” at Christmas time.

The Key West Harbor Walk kicks off the holiday season on Thanksgiving eve (Nov. 25th) with the “Lighting of the Harbor Walk” followed by a second lighting of the natural Christmas Trees on December 3rd. The “Key West Harbor Walk of Lights” will be energized through New Years Eve. There’ll be lots of great family fun events around the Harbor Walk of Lights throughout the entire holiday season, from a night for pictures with Santa and your pet, to a gigantic lighted boat parade, a two-day concert/carnival, and a Free Christmas Music concert, all outdoors on the waterfront. The schedule for the 2009 season includes two nights for the kids, one night for the pets, to get a picture with Santa who’ll be sitting on the Harbor Walk of Lights at the “Santa by the Bight” events. There’ll also be two nights of Free Classic Christmas Movies set up outside for the kids (while the parents shop), a “Holiday Art Walk - Open House & Jewelry Trunk Show” at the Key West Art Bar, and 3 days of the “Bight Wide Sale” along the Seaport Harbor Walk area with deep discounts at shops, galleries and on water sports gift certificates. The second weekend of December is full of holiday fun along the Harbor Walk of Lights, starting with a big two-day event featuring live music, food, drinks and non-stop entertainment. Called the "Holiday Cayo Carnival", it’s the new annual benefit for Reef Relief sponsored by the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and will take place outside at the Conch Republic Seafood Company. Capping off that holiday weekend there’s the homegrown and always fantastic 19th annual “Schooner Wharf Bar Lighted Boat Parade” with ships tall and small that pass the reviewing stand right above the Harbor Walk. The festivities continue on the final weekend before Christmas with the fourth annual “Free Christmas Concert on the Harbor Walk of Lights”, featuring 5 diverse musical groups, local and national, that will cover all your favorite Christmas songs and popular music. That night also features the “Bite of the Bight” holiday food tasting, along with the Bight Wide sale running all weekend long. After a great Christmas day, the Key West Harbor Walk continues to be, the place to be for holiday fun. Many early events will de drop off points for the Just 4 Kids toy drive, and part of event proceeds will benefit this local charity that aids children and families all year long throughout Monroe County. Then capping off 2009 there’s the “as seen on CNN” New Year’s Eve - Schooner Wharf Bar “Lowering of the Wench” down a tall ship’s mast at midnight, right next the Harbor Walk of Lights.

Key West also is the home of enchanting holiday lighted guesthouse tours of the most beautiful old town historic inns decked out in their full decorated glory. The “Holiday Historic Inn Tour” is the perfect way to view these magnificent properties decorated for the season, featuring art, fine food, and refreshments. These tours are produced by the Key West InnKeepers Association and complete information can be found at keywestinntour.com.

The 2009 Key West “Bight Before Christmas” Holiday Celebration at the Historic Seaport is produced by the Key West Bight Preservation Association and the tenants of the Historic Seaport, in cooperation with Historic Seaport Management and the City of Key West. Tom Stroh, celebration originator/director said “It’s so heartwarming to have all our sponsors, the Seaport tenants and the City staff all come together to help produce this 5 weeks of holiday excitement on the waterfront, making Key West a great destination during the entire Holiday season. And, all this is accomplished without using any taxpayer money.”

For the most up to date information of the 2009 Bight Before Christmas holiday happenings along the Key West Harbor Walk of Lights, go to the official web site keywestchristmas.org. Landrum and Grube Win New-Look Turtle Trot

With new sponsor Hurricane Hole Marina serving as gracious host, 150 runners and walkers took to the new course on Stock Island to participate in the 14th Annual Turtle Trot 5K. Big Pine's Nathan Landrum and Marathon's Laure Grube captured first place honors.

Landrum, 24, who scored wins at the Blimp Road 4-Miler and No Name 5K in February, pursued Miami's Jon Williams before making a late charge to pull away on the final straightaway for a 17:29 to 17:33 win. Marathon's Martin Sykut was third overall -- and Masters Champ -- in 18:47, and Key West High School freshman Aeschton Tomita took 4th in 20:11.

Grube kept her streak alive, following up solid wins at the Sombrero Beach 10K and the Menendez Miler 5K with a runaway victory here. Her 20:34 winning time came tantalizingly close to her lifetime best and bested Tavernier's Joanie Scholz (21:32) by nearly a minute.

Ohio's Susan Patterson (21:48) and Key West's Josette Goodroe (22:14) finished third and fourth, just ahead of a trio of KWHS girls. Sophomore Emma Fehlig (22:41), freshman Morgan Nelson (22:51) and senior Alyssa Sawyer (22:53) ran together and pushed one another to their best times ever on the roads.

The new location required a new configuration, so the College Road loop was employed, with the finishing stretch located on the tree-lined bike path between US-1 and the golf course.

Hurricane Hole and BW Promotions served up a good event. Sponsors include BW Promotions- Race Promoter and Founder, Hurricane Hole, Cypress House, Island 107 FM, KW Southernmost Runners, Bone island Athletic Club, Coca cola, Sapporo Beer, Waterfront Market, Goldman's Bagels, and many more raffles: Days Inn, Appledore, Schooner wharf, Sunset Watersports, Kermit's Key Lime Shop and much more!!!

For those who have been running the Turtle Trot all these years, Barb Wright thanks you for coming back to our new course and location! Proceeds from the race since 1996 have gone toward the Key West High School Track and Field program.

11Th ANNUAL KEY WEST 1/2 MARATHON RUN
Official KWHM Race Photos by Cox Sports Photo Here

The 11th Annual Key West Half Marathon was held on January 25, 2009 with 600 entered in the race that we just recently obtained the new host Sponsor Hurricane Hole Restaurant & Marina. Danny Joseph from Venice FL took the overall win with a close finish with army officer stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama, Nick Dason,  Nick also is a triathlete on the US Army Triathlete Team.

Joseph clocked a time of 1.18.57.
Nick Dason 1.19.15.

In the female division Joanna McCoy a freshman at Coral Shores High School in the Upper Keys was first women with a time of 1.26.30.

I was, until recently, going to put it on without a sponsor after the Half Shell Raw Bar decided they did not want to continue sponsoring the event and keep the same course, however after sending out numerous proposals, the Hurricane Hole agreed to host all of the events we changed the course to Florida Keys Community College, I hired Timing MD, the Indiana based chip timing team to do the timing, registration and results and the Key West Southernmost Runners to layout the course.

I chose two additional charities this year in addition to the Key West High School Running Program, the FKCC Youth Swim Program and the Heron-Peacock Supportive Living for Mentally Handicapped persons in Monroe County.

We have had many return runners, and the groups from New Jersey, Maine and Indiana.

Our guest speaker was Lynn Jennings. The Volunteers were incredible we had 200 volunteers that were on every corner and covering 13 water stations. There was lots of stress and logistic worries prior to Hurricane Holes commitment.

The Hurricane Hole group are really enthusiastic about the event and for the awards party we had a great band the Bubba System, Sam Adams Beer, raffles and a post post race party to follow the awards party with a BBQ.

I provided a shuttle service early at lands end marina (Old Race Location) for all the participants with out vehicles to get out to the College and After the run we will have shuttle service the one mile to Hurricane Hole for the party.

Our sponsors were Hurricane Hole Restaurant & Marina, BW Promotions, Cypress House-Timing MD, Key West Southernmost Runners, Coca Cola, Sam Adams, Waste Management, Moose Lodge-, Island 107 FM, 451 Graffix, Albertsons, Waterfront Market-Fruit, Goldman's Bagels, Green Parrot Bar, First State Bank, and all those great raffles from generous Key West business's.
